How much does LASIK cost?
When shopping for LASIK, keep in mind that different practices may charge in different ways and that levels of experience and technology can vary greatly between practices. In the case of Wills Laser Vision at Princeton, the cost reflects the amount of expert care dedicated to each patient from some of New Jersey’s most respected and highly-sought after LASIK surgeons, as well as all medications, post-operative care, and any necessary enhancements for one year.
While pricing of LASIK will vary depending on the specific treatment and complexity of your surgery and whether you require conventional LASIK or more custom LASIK, expect the total average cost to be around $2,000 to $3,000 per eye (your doctor will explain to you the exact cost for your situation and the breakdown of costs).
Does insurance cover LASIK?
Because most insurance plans consider LASIK or PRK to be an elective procedure (unlike, say, eye exams to diagnose medical conditions), most do not cover the cost of refractive surgery or laser vision correction. There are a few exceptions, such as when surgery is deemed medically necessary. In any case, it never hurts to double-check with your insurance carrier. Some insurance plans, especially with larger employers, may offer indemnity plans that cover a portion of coverage.
Is LASIK eye surgery affordable without insurance?
We often hear from patients how LASIK has changed their lives, from waking up to crystal clear mornings, to participating in work, sports, hobbies, and family activities without glasses or contact lenses, to no longer having to deal with the hassle of breaking glasses or losing a contact lens. Some patients have said that they viewed their LASIK procedure as an investment in their own quality of life. So even if your LASIK treatment will not be covered by insurance, we have a number of options that may help make it more affordable for you:
Easy Payment Options
Wills Laser Vision at Princeton is able to offer internal financing of your LASIK. We ask for a down payment prior to your surgery, and the balance can be paid off over six months. We never charge any interest.
Patients may also apply for 6 or 12 months interest-free financing plans, with no money down, at Care Credit for Wills Laser Vision or by calling 1-800-677-0718. Longer financing terms are available at reduced APR. Payments are made directly to Care Credit and are subject to credit approval.
Flexible Spending Accounts (FSA)
Many employers offer Flexible Spending Accounts or FSA’s. These plans allow you to have money taken out of your paycheck over time to pay for medical procedures, including LASIK. You gain additional benefits because your withheld funds are in Pre-Tax dollars. When you spend these funds for qualified expenses, like LASIK, you will not have paid taxes on the funds. Come in for a free consultation to find out if you are a candidate for LASIK; we can help you calculate how much you set aside in your FSA.
Health Savings Accounts (HSA)
A Health Savings Account (HSA) is another way you can use pre-tax dollars to pay for LASIK. HSAs are typically available to individuals covered under a high-deductible health plan (HDHP) and can also help you save on qualified medical expenses like LASIK.
If you have an HSA, it is best to come in for a free consultation to find out if you are a candidate for LASIK so we can help you calculate how much to allocate.
Coverage or Discounts Through Insurance and Employers
Some health insurance companies or vision insurance plans are offering partial coverage or a discount for LASIK to their participants. We will be happy to review your plan and see if you qualify for any discounts.
Some local employers will pay for laser vision correction as a benefit for their employees. Contact your Employee Benefits manager, or ask us about our experiences.
Tax Deduction for LASIK
LASIK surgery is among the medical expenses qualified for a state and federal tax write-off.
Not every taxpayer is able to deduct these itemized medical expenses, and there are specific requirements to use this benefit.
